A new report is claiming that Amazon is in the process of developing both an 8.9" tablet and a 10.1" tablet to sit alongside the 7" Kindle Fire, and that the 8.9" tablet could hit the market as soon as Q2 of 2012.
The report from DigiTimes says that according to supply chain makers in Taiwan, Foxconn is going to start building 7" Kindle Fires for Amazon in Q1 of 2012, joining with the current manufacturer Quanta Computer. We had heard rumors earlier that Amazon and Foxconn were working together on a Kindle phone, so more collaboration between the companies seems likely.
The report also says that while Amazon is developing a 10.1" Kindle tablet, the company is aiming to put out an 8.9" tablet first, perhaps as soon as Q2 of 2012. The word is that Amazon doesn't want to join the crowded field of tablets in the 10" range, and would rather target the market for 8.9" tablets. It doesn't hurt that LG and Samsung are heavily promoting components for 8.9" tablets either.
