Today, we want to show you a new laptop which is a little unusual for its external case made of plastic material: The Mountain Performance 15 (produced by the Spanish company Mountain).
At first sight, you won’t be surprised by the extremely basic and traditional design. The external view is almost completely black without fancy parts. Actually, it is a product designed for efficiency, not for fashionable purposes. However, the internal features are not so basic.
It offers all what people would expect from any modern computer these days; for example, HDMI and DVI video outputs, numeric pad as part of the included keyboard, eSATA port, and USB 3.0 connection.
Inside, the computer has an Intel Core i7 2630QM processor, Kingston DDR3 RAM of up to 8GB (2 x 4GB), an NVidia GT 555M graphics card with GDDR3 memory of 2GB, Intel HD Graphics 3000, and a 120GB Intel SSD 320 hard drive which makes the laptop fast enough.
While this is not the most powerful computer in the market, it is a really good option if you are looking for -but not limited to- a gaming computer with modern characteristics.
The motherboard is a Clevo W150HRM and, besides the video outputs we already mentioned, it also comes with VGA output and a LED screen that measures 15.6 inches with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. As for audio, the laptop offers high definition sound compatible with THXTruStudio Pro. The battery has six cells, which is not excellent but pretty good for a gaming computer. In addition, it comes with a built-in 2MP webcam as well as flash cards reader.
Computer for games… or what you want to do
As said before, this laptop is suitable for games due to its resolution and the size of the screen. It has two graphics cards that will be perfect for using in a wide range of circumstances and, as a very interesting thing, this computer is compatible with the NVidia Optimus technology. This way, the on-board GPU (Graphics processing unit) and the dedicated GPU can be alternated continuously in order to get the most convenient performance depending on the executed programs. In fact, the Nvidia card is perfect for games and applications/programs that use high-quality images and, on the other hand, the on-board native graphics card can be used in regular activities that not require extensive graphic resources. Here, at MyDDNetwork, we have already used this computer and, in our opinion, this feature works like a charm.
It’s one of the best things we found in this product.
Anytime, users can select the card they want to use and there are some graphic settings than can be modified through a control panel specifically designed for this purpose and included with the computer.
The Mountain Performance 15 was thought to be a high-performance computer with an affordable price, starting at $1330 (978 Euros) with a two-year warranty included with the purchase.
As usual with many gaming computers, users have the possibility to improve certain components. So, for example, you can opt for a better and faster processor. Of course, the motherboard (W150HRM) needs to be compatible with any additional or modified component.
In addition, we want to emphasize that users can change the original 120GB Intel SSD 320 hard drive. In particular, it can be replaced by a solid-state drive (SSD): The Intel SSD 320 that also has a capacity of 120GB. It costs additional money but if you keep in mind that you can have a faster machine by using a SSD unit, then you should consider this change… especially if you are going to use this computer as a gaming laptop.
In case you use the SSD unit, you will get a read speed of 251 MB/s and a write speed of 132 MB/s. That’s a really good reason to prefer the solid-state drive, since you will really feel the difference.
Of course, it would be great if we could use more SSD options such as the OCZ Vertex 3 SandForce SF-2000, which is an excellent SSD unit. But, at this time, the only available option is the Intel SSD 320 that is not bad at all anyway. Surely this is a commercial restriction and we have to live with it, at least, while the warranty is valid.
Although the features are perfect for games, this laptop if suitable for everything from browsing the web to running professional and demanding software. So, of course, you don’t have to be a devoted gamer to buy this laptop.
