You can use smartphones
for many things - they can be seen in the hands of medical personnel
and toddlers, IT professionals and construction workers, but one thing
you don’t often see smartphones do is control a cafe. To underscore the
importance of good design by showing off how bad design can really cause
frustration, Swedes from design agency Perfect Fools built a
smartphone-controlled cafe, named Café Kauko, and placed cameras, so you
can watch.
You just had to log in to
youdesign.fi to be able to control the atmosphere, music and lighting in
the café, and also the height of the tables and chairs. Multiple
live-streaming cameras caught people’s reactions ranging from pleased to
angry, and you can watch part of that in the video below. You could
also log in with your Nokia Lumia handset.
But
what we really take from this is the concept - having a smart home, or
just smart buildings that you can control with your phone at all times.
The possibilities seem endless, and with the Café Kauko going on road
tour in other countries after Finland, you could soon see and experience
it in person.
