Talk about great timing! Just Tuesday morning we told you that the Wall Street Journal was reporting that Google had started to accelerate development of a Siri-esque virtual personal assistant
for Android. At the same time, the Samsung Galaxy S III has S Voice, a
personal assistant that nearly matches Siri head to head. Now, before
you can say fragmentation, LG has developed a challenger of its own in this space called Quick Voice.
Quick
Voice, which is what the feature is called in Korea, does the same
things that Siri and S Voice do, even matching some of Siri's new
features like opening apps. Other functions include the ability to have
texts sent, calls made, alarms set, stock prices found and web searches
done all by having a natural conversation with Quick Voice. The software
will be sent to overseas LG Optimus devices through a software update sometime between the end of June and July. While
there is no mention of a U.S. release date for Quick Voice, considering
the desire for a strong Android answer to Siri, there would be no
reason for LG to hold Quick Voice back from a Stateside release.
If each manufacturer starts offering its own virtual personal assistant, the pressure will be on Google to show what the Mountain View based tech titan has been working on in this space. With Google I/O coming a week from today, we might get to see this sooner than later.
