This one is for all the nerds in the house. The National Ignition
Facility (NIF) has just fired the most powerful laser in the history of
lasers. The laser, which fires for a fraction of a second, peaked at 500
Trillion watts, which is 1000 times more power than the US uses in any
given moment, and is over 100 times more energetic than any of the
lasers anywhere in the world. The point behind all of this, apart from
being all sorts of nerd cool, is hydrogen fusion, one of the Holy Grails
of energy production. To be honest, though, we believe this is all just
