It’s no question that Apple’s iPod has reigned supreme in the
portable media player landscape, but its dominance hasn’t deterred
manufacturers in creating products in the same category. Samsung’s
Galaxy S WiFi 4.2 is one of those products, and is aimed at individuals
who want a multimedia player that doesn’t have a fruit logo on the back.
The Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 is a bit of an oddity, considering
that’s it’s a bit off when it comes to screen size (with most 4-inch
devices clocking in at either 4- or 4.3-inches), though its overall
size 124.1 x 66.1 x 8.99mm means it’s almost the same size as a typical
Android smartphone. The screen is a 4.2-inch, WVGA TFT deal, and the
unit itself is running on a single core 1GHz procesor with Android 2.3
(Gingerbread) on board. Also, we’re a bit confused over Samsung’s naming
conventions in this case – Samsung Philippines calls it the Galaxy
Player 4.2, though the box states it’s the Galaxy S WiFi 4.2.
Overall the unit felt ok, and as we said, it handled pretty much like
a typical 4-inch Android smartphone. One thing we did notice is that
the device is preloaded with two games – Fifa 2012 and Need For Speed:
Hot Pursuit, which should keep users busy whenever boredom strikes. The
screen is wide and bright enough that using it as a dedicated video
player shouldn’t be a problem, and its speakers have sufficient oomph to
let people understand whatever they’re watching. The Samsung Galaxy S
WiFi 4.2 is priced at Php 9,990 here in the Philippines.
