Smart says “joint use” of Bayantel frequencies by Globe is ‘illegal’ [UPDATE: Globe issues official statement]

Smart Telecommunications has sent out a press release today strongly opposing the “joint use” agreement entered into by Globe Telecom and Bayan Telecommunications. If you don’t know about the issue, here’s the quick recap – Bayan Telecommunications has had the rights to use the 1800 MHz Band which were assigned to them by the NTC for the provision of mobile phone services. But since Bayan

Telecommunications doesn’t have an active mobile service, Smart says that under NTC Memorandum Circular No. 3-3-96 that states “an assigned frequency which remains unused for one year from date of issuance of permits and license may thus be recalled or withdrawn consistent with national and public service” that particular band needs to be reassigned or auctioned off to all interested and qualified applicants in an open and competitive bidding process.

Enrico L. Espanol, head of Smart’s Legal and Regulatory Department said in a letter that “it is undeniable that Bayantel has not been using these frequencies for at least one year considering that it has not been providing any CMTS service to thegeneral public.  Consequently, these unused frequencies assigned to Bayantel should be recalled by the

HonorableCommission upon service of notice and hearing.” He also said that under the law and jurisprudence the assignment of a frequency to a telecommunications operator by the government does not confer on the operator a vested property right over the frequency.  He quoted a Supreme Court ruling that states telcos “are merely given the temporary privilege of using them.”

He also said that the joint use deal of Bayan Tel and Globe Telecommunications would be an “enormous loss of government revenues as the latter would be deprived of income resulting from a competitive auction among interested bidders.”

Globe brings out nano-SIMs for early iPhone 5 adaptors

Apple’s iPhone 5 became available in some parts of the world over the weekend and it was already expected that a lot of Filipinos will somehow get this latest Apple product before it gets here. Most likely, these people sourced their iPhone 5 from Hong Kong and Singapore.

To supplement their purchase, Globe has released their nano-SIMs in the market over the weekend well ahead of their official iPhone 5 launch. Aside from the having a taller form, the iPhone 5 also makes use of the smaller nano-SIM card which is 40% smaller than the micro-SIM. It’s the only phone to make use of the new SIM standard as of the moment.

Globe is offering the nano-SIM for free to new postpaid subscribers and existing postpaid subscribers as replacement. For prepaid subscribers, all you can do is get a new nano-SIM for Php40.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be launched by telcos by November according to top Filipino tech blog site, Yugatech. In the meantime, there’s still the gray market for your local source of iPhone 5.

Sun offers Galaxy S3 free on Sun Plan 1699

This is a huge surprise from Sun Cellular. They are now offering the Samsung Galaxy S3 free on a postpaid plan with a monthly service fee of Php1,699.

The Sun Plan 1699 includes unlimited mobile internet and unlimited Sun-to-Sun texts. Additional values include 4 hours of Sun-to-Sun calls and 250 free SMS to other networks.

The postpaid plan is only worth Php999 and the additional Php700 a month is for the amortization of the handset.

This is probably the first time that Sun has offered a flagship handset in their line-up. Normally, the plans are all under 1 thousand pesos with about Php500 as the median plan on postpaid.

There’s a 30-month lock-in period for this plan.
P.S. And that’s also the reason why they offered the Sun micro-SIM earlier.

Sun Cellular now offers micro-SIM card

Sun Cellular is now offering micro-SIM cards to all its postpaid and prepaid subscribers. This could be in anticipation of upcoming handsets in their network.

Announced this Thursday, the Sun microSIM will be made available to existing users or new subscribers.
The price of the microSIM will be the same as the regular SIM. However, should you wish to switch your existing SIM card to a micro-SIM, you can bring it to any Sun Cell Shops and have it replaced (retaining the number) for a minimal fee.
The Sun Broadband prepaid micro-SIM comes with an initial 5 hours of internet. Afterwards, you can further enjoy high-speed mobile internet on your tablet with Sun Cellular’s SBW 250 prepaid card, which gives you unlimited internet for 7 days.

Hardcore techies who usually have more than one gadget can get the Sun Broadband Multi-SIM Plan 699, enabling them to simultaneously utilize the power of their gadgets without the hassle of paying multiple bills. The Sun Broadband Multi-Plan 699 gives them a shared 130 hours of mobile internet for one month, shared between 2 separate SIMs.
Smart and Globe have been offering the microSIM for over a year now because of the introduction of handsets and tablets that uses them.

Sun Cellular’s move to offer the same might be an indication that they will carry high-end phones that requires a micro-SIM.

Smart Freedom Plan: The Zero-Balance Postpaid Plan

Earlier today, Smart introduced their new hybrid postpaid plan called the Freedom Plan. The idea combines the status of a postpaid subscriber but the non-commitment of a prepaid user.

Meaning, you only pay at the end of the month like any other postpaid subscriber but the amount is based on what you actually consumed (this type of plan used to be available to Smart employees, referred to as Plan Zero).

Smart is also making the application process easier compared to the regular postpaid plan. This means no more proof of billing, just a regular valid ID.
The Freedom Plan has a credit limit of only Php600 a month and you can subscribe to any of the following bucket services:
The Smart Postpaid Freedom Plan enables users to purchase service “buckets” such as Trio Talk 150 which offers 150 minutes of calls to Smart, Sun, and Talk ‘N Text subscribers good for 15 days for only P150, and All Text 200 which includes 2000 texts to all networks and 150MB of mobile surfing good for 30 days for only P200.
Oh, and you get to switch the bucket services every so often (since you just text in your service subscription just like in prepaid).
The Freedom Plan is Smart’s strategy to convert prepaid subscribers to postpaid subs and, in the process, gather some sort of credit history (payment behavior) of the subs that might eventually upgrade to the regular postpaid plans.

Some caveats though — you cannot bring your prepaid number when you shift to the Freedom Plan (new SIM and number) and you cannot also downgrade your regular postpaid plan to the Freedom Plan (requires a new subscription).

Say goodbye to Red Mobile!

PLDT President Napoleon Nazareno has revealed that they’ll be cutting the strings off of its subsidiary CURE (Connectivity Unlimited Resource Enterprises Inc.) otherwise known as Red Mobile by the end of the month.

The spectrum used by Red Mobile will be released back to the National Telecommunications Commission as a part of the conditions set by the regulators upon the acquisition of Digital Telecommunications Philippines back in October 2011.

So far, they’ve already migrated about 1.1 million subscribers of the soon-to-be-defunct network to Smart Communications Inc. — another subsidiary of PLDT — which is about 85% of its 1.3 million total user base. PLDT currently owns four mobile phone networks, mainly Smart, Talk ‘N Txt, Red Mobile and its newest ‘foster child’ Sun Cellular.

According to Interaksyon, CURE’s 10 megahertz 3G frequency remnants will be returned to NTC for bidding, the proceeds of which will then be shared by both PLDT and NTC to recover the telecom’s costs plus half of the amount in excess of its investments.

Globe expands PowerSurf volume-based plans, now with daily rates

For Globe subscribers who needs all-day access to the internet but only for light usage such as tweeting, posting Facebook status, or checking in on Foursquare,  you’ll be happy to know that Globe’s PowerSurf MB plan has been updated to include daily rates.

PowerSurf MB promotes KB-based browsing, which means you can stay connected and only get charged once you send or receive data. And since PowerSurf gives you bulk megabytes (MB) of mobile internet, which is consumable per kilobyte (KB), you can stay connected longer.
Here’s the updated PowerSurf MB plans you can avail from Globe:

Plan Price MB Allocation Validity
PowerSurf 15 Php15 20MB 1 day
PowerSurf 30 Php30 50MB 1 day
PowerSurf 50 Php50 100MB 3 days
PowerSurf 99 Php99 50MB 30 days
PowerSurf 299 Php299 300MB 30 days
PowerSurf 499 Php499 1GB 30 days

To register to any of these PowerSurf plan, dial *143# and press call for free. Powersurf 15, 30, and 50 are only available to prepaid subscribers.

“We understand that mobile browsing users have different needs so we’re excited to let our subscribers know that they are empowered to choose which PowerSurf plan suits them best for a worry-free surfing experience,” said Jenny Echevarria, Head of Globe Mobile Data Services. “So whatever your mobile browsing habits are or sites you go to, you can choose from which PowerSurf MB plan that suits you best so that you can go lang ng go with Globe Mobile Internet, your way.”

Rumor: SM’s Henry Sy buying Globe Telecom?

We got this really surprising tip from a source that rumor is going around that billionaire tycoon Henry Sy is looking to buy controlling shares of Globe Telecom.

Henry Sy has interestes in a lot of markets — retail, real estate, banking, leisure, etc. This rumored interest in the telecoms industry could have been sparked by the recent acquisition of Digitel by PLDT, putting the competition between Smart and Globe in a spotlight.
Earlier, Globe has secured a $90 million loan from China Banking Corp. to spend for the expansion of its 4G network in the Philippines. China Bank is also owned by Henry Sy.

Globe has a market capitalization of around Php142 billion and recently achieved a 1st quarter revenue of Php20.2 billion (Q1, 2012). The company is partly owned by the Ayalas with 32% share while Singaporean telecom, Singtel, owns 47%.

Henry Sy is the Philippine’s richest guy (#173 in the world) with an estimated worth of $8 billion or Php344 billion. That’s more than enough money to buy controlling shares of Globe.

Henry Sy doesn’t need to buy it out of the Ayala clan. He can just buy the majority shares from Singtel to take control of the telco.

Again, it’s just a rumor (so take this story with a grain of salt) but if this actually happens, Henry Sy might do to Globe what it did to Banco de Oro — propelling the company to the top spot by leveraging on its assets and interests in other markets.

Galaxy S3: Smart UnliData 2000 vs. Globe UnliSurf 2499

As we near the official launch of the highly anticipated Samsung S3, the two telco giants vies for the hearts of prospective upgraders and switchers through their plans. Now before you get too excited and sign up for any of these telcos, let’s take a closer look at their offerings and see which one fits your lifestyle and usage pattern.

As we mentioned in our previous post, Globe was the first to reveal their range of plan for the SGS3. This quad-core handset will come in free with their UnliSurf Plan 2499 and will have a standard lock-in period of 24 months. Apart from the unlimited mobile internet, the plan will also have consumables worth Php1,500 a month.
Following the said announcement, Smart recently unveiled their available plans for the same phone. The SGS3 will come in free with their UnliData Plan 2000 which is Php499 cheaper than Globe’s offering.

The catch here, however, is that you’d have be with the carrier for a longer period of time. The lock-in period for this plan is 30 months (instead of the 24-months on Globe).
Here’s a short computation of how these two plans look like:

Globe Galaxy S3
Php2,499 (UnliSurf Plan)
x 24 months (lock-in period)
Php59,976
TCO
Smart Galaxy S3
Php2,000 (UnliData Plan)
x 30 months (lock-in period)
Php60,000
TCO

* TCO: Total Cost of Ownership

Looking at this, it’s clear that neither plan gains a significant edge over the other in terms of the total amount a user has to pay (TCO). But what clearly sets them apart is the lock-in period. The Php500 per month difference between the two plans will come into play in this situation.

If you can afford to shell out an extra Php500 every month so you can get out of the plan a bit faster, then the Globe UnliSurf Plan is for you. But, if you’re not in a rush to switch phones or plan and does not have a spare Php500 a month, better go with Smart’s UnliData Plan. At the end of the day, it boils down to how much you’re willing to shell out for this quad-core handset.
In terms of bundles here’s what the two plans has to offer:

Globe UnliSurf 2499
Php1500 Consumable
Free Texts: 200 (Globe-to-Globe) + 25 (Other Networks)
Free Call: 10mins (Globe-to-Globe) + 5mins (Other Networks)
Free Texts (International): 10
Free Call (International): 20mins IDD
Free UnliCall and Text: 1 Globe or TM number

Smart UnliData 2000
N/A
Free Texts (All Networks): 200
Free Call (All Networks): 150 mins

By having a little bit of everything the UnliSurf 2499 plan bested Smart’s UnliData 2000 plan in terms of bundled services. In addition to this, the former has Php1500 consumable per month. That sums up to an additional 245 minutes worth of voice calls to same network subscriber or 226 minutes to other networks per month compared to Smart’s fixed 150 minutes to all network.

Based on the comparison above, we think that Globe’s UnliSurf 2499 is the better of the two in terms of bundled services and flexibility. Then again, there are also other important factors that you, as a consumer, need to look into such as network coverage and dependability that we really can’t comment on because that depends on your current location.
What we are sure though is that the introduction of these plans for the Galaxy S3 will definitely hurt the sell-ability of the other handsets in their line-up.

With Smart — the HTC Sensation XE, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Nexus which also comes free with UnliData Plan 2000 will definitely be overshadowed by the Galaxy S3. With Globe — the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Galaxy Note might also suffer the same fate. For both networks, it might also hurt the sales of the iPhone 4S which is offered at the same or higher plan.

Just to sum this one up, we are more inclined to recommend Globe’s UnliSurf 2499 for flexibility and maximizing plan usage. But, if you just want a really low monthly fee, Smart’s UnliData Plan 2000 is the obvious pick.

Smart revisits Always On plans with cheaper rates

Smart has revised their Alway On plans to offer more bucket options and drive prices down. The new plan starts at Php10 for 5MB of mobile internet usable in 24 hours.

Here are the bucket pricing from last year and when you compare that to the new table below, you will notice some of the plans were reduced while others remained the same (an indication that the move is to level with competition, otherwise it would have been across the board).
The 1GB bucket is now Php499 from Php750 last year (same with Globe PowerSurf 499) while the 250MB bucket is now Php199 from Php300. The 50MB for Php99 for 30days was also introduced (now exactly the same as Globe PowerSurf 99).

The revised Always On plans now make Smart’s offering better compared to Globe’s PowerSurf. However, the main difference between the two is that Smart’s Always On plans are available to SmartBro prepaid users and not postpaid subscribers. It’s also available to Smart Postpaid GSM subs as well.

PLDT once again pushed its accelerator as it upgrades their PLDT MyDSL solution for SMEs. Sun Cellular gets domestic roaming with Smart

We earlier reported that Sun Cellular was riding on Smart’s network to expand its coverage in certain areas and we’ve also asked readers to confirm this. It looks like Sun has already verified this by connecting to Smart via domestic roaming.

We’re all familiar with international roaming and have the impression that roaming between networks is very expensive. But in this case, I believe Sun is getting a free ride on Smart’s vast network (considering they both belong under the PLDT Group).
TechLokal confirms this move by Sun (via Sun Cellular VP for CRM Reuben Pangan):
We have expanded our coverage in Mindanao in cooperation with our sister company in the PLDT Group. In fact, it has even extended to areas in Luzon such as Nueva Ecija, Benguet, Kalinga, and Isabela as well as Marinduque.
This means Sun subscribers in those areas will experience better cell signal, including 2G and 3G connections.

Sun has over 6,000 cell sites nationwide and Smart has an additional 13,000 cell sites boosting coverage in a lot of areas.

Update: An engineer close to the implementation of this project tells me this is just the testing phase and they will be done by July or August this year. Apparently, the domestic roaming is just an interim solution but once the test phase is done, both networks will be merged.

Smart Unli Data Plan 1000 vs. Unli Data Plan 2000

Smart today announced a new data plan for postpaid subscribers, the Smart Unli Data Plan 1000. Although it’s just a limited-edition plan and is only offered until May 15, 2012, the new data plan compliments the existing Plan 2000 which comes with free choice of a flagship handset.

The current Smart Unli Data Plan 2000 comes with a choice of Samsung Galaxy Note, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and HTC Sensation XE w/ Beats Audio for free. The monthly allocations for the plan is 200 SMS and 150 minutes of free voice calls to any network. It also comes with unlimited mobile internet but has a data cap of 1.5GB per month.
Now comes the limited-edition Unli Data Plan 1000 which looks more attractive but has a caveat. First, let’s look at the basic offering and what services come free with the plan (lifted from TechLokal)
The Php1,000 monthly service fee comes with the following: 500 text messages to all networks; 500 voice minutes to Smart and Talk ‘N Text numbers; and 1GB worth of data.
You can then get any of these handsets with an additional monthly fee for 24 months:
Samsung Galaxy Note (+ Php900)
Samsung Galaxy Nexus (+ Php900)
Samsung Galaxy Tab
7.0 (+ Php800)
HTC Sensation XE
with Beats Audio (+ Php900)
HTC Evo 3D (+ Php900)
Nokia N9
(+ Php900)
BlackBerry Curve 9360
(+ Php800)
BlackBerry Bold 9790 (+ Php900)
BlackBerry Bold 9900
(+ Php1,300)
Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray (+ Php500)

So while you’d pay Php2,000 a month for Unli Data 2000 and a free Galaxy Nexus, you also pay Php1,900 a month for the same under Unli Data Plan 1000. The Php100 difference can be attributed to the lower data cap and the voice calls within the Smart network and not on all networks.

In hindsight, there’s really not that much difference between Plan 1000 and Plan 2000. The good thing is, you now have more subsidized handsets to choose from.

Smart’s ‘Tri-net’ prepaid offer lets you play more with Smart, Sun, and Talk ‘N Text subscribers

Smart recently bared their latest all-around prepaid offering that lets you spend more time with Smart, Sun, and Talk ‘N Text subscribers.
The new ‘Tri-net’ combo bucket offers allow Smart subscribers to capitalize on the network’s partnership with Sun Cellular. We first heard of the Trio 20 which is only a text and call package but with the ‘Tri-net’, you also get to enjoy the benefits of mobile internet.
SRP Package Validity Availment via Registration
TRINET 30 100 all-net sms + 50 tri-net mins + 5MB 1 day Text TRINET30 send to 2477
TRINET 100 500 all-net sms + 120 tri-net mins + 70MB 7 days Text TRINET100 send to 2477

So for the ‘Tri-net 30’ bundle, you will get 100 SMS to all networks, 50 call minutes to Smart, Sun and Talk ‘N Text, and 5MB worth of mobile Internet, all valid for a day for only P30.

To avail of Tri-net 30, subscribers must register to the package by sending Text TRINET30 to 2477. To avail of Tri-net 100, users just need to send TRINET100  to 2477.

Once registered, users can call any Smart, Talk ‘N Text, or Sun number by calling *2477 plus the 11-digit mobile number, e.g., *247709181234567.
These offers will be available until April 2, 2012 and only to Smart Prepaid Subscribers nationwide.

Globe implements Load Watch for Prepaid Subs

This was shared to us by the folks from Globe Telecom last February 14 but I completely forgot about it. I only remembered it again when I used the prepaid SIM card they gave me to test on the HTC Titan.

In any case, the concept is pretty simple — you get an SMS alert every time you use your load credits.
So when you make a phone call, once you hang up, Globe will send you an SMS how much load you have left. This will give you an idea of your running balance and be updated of your load credits all the time.

The service stems from issues that prepaid load credits mysteriously disappear (folks call it “nakaw load” for years now) and though investigations don’t normally end well for the subscriber, this Load Watch might just help prevent it from happening.

At the moment, this is only available for prepaid subscribers (it is free and automatic so you don’t have to activate anything).

Anybody else notice this service on their prepaid accounts? Do you see this as a useful feature?

Manila airports get free WiFi courtesy of Globe

Good news to travelers out there. Globe Telecom recently partnered with the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to bring free WiFi access to passengers at all NAIA terminals (1, 2, and 3) as well as those at the Manila Domestic Airport.
Although NAIA 1 needs more work, providing free WiFi access to airport terminals is a step to modernization and would give passengers stuck on a delayed flight one less thing to complain about. If done right, this would also showcase Globe’s network performance to first-time visitors looking for a carrier to use while in the country.
The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is one of the busiest airports in the world, with over 27-million passengers served in 2010. Moreover, an additional 18-million passengers flew domestic routes.
“Globe recognizes the increasing need for people to stay connected and in touch, whether it’s via a mobile phone or the internet. As we modernize our network and deliver faster broadband service, we are giving back to the Filipino people by powering the gateway to the Philippines with free WiFi service,” said Gil Genio, Head of the International & Business Markets of Globe Telecom.
The government has earmarked P1.16-Billion to upgrade the NAIA, which includes an array of structural works and more basic amenities in the 30-year old airport.
Globe is in the thick of a massive, $700-Million mobile network modernization program which will transform the entire Globe network infrastructure into the most modern and most resilient the country and give customers vastly improved call quality under pervasive 3G coverage, rare dropped calls, and instantaneous SMS delivery as well as enjoy blazingly fast mobile internet access.

Smart launches TRIO 20, prepaid package for Smart-Sun-TNT
